BIOGRAPHY
Richard Syska attended Columbus College of Art and Design where he studed, illustration, design, photography, glassblowing, printmaking, painting techniques, art history, anatomy and figure drawing. Graduating with a BFA in illustration and design, he moved to Chicago Illinois where he worked various jobs both freelance and full-time designing and illustrating arcade games, editorial illustration for textbooks, magazines, advertisements and corporate brochures, finally working as the head of a design department for an advertising agency. Later in the 90's he co-owned a coffee-shop/performance space, the Nervous Center which became a center for the creative community in Chicago known for it's cutting-edge live music and art scene. Soon he abandoned the commercial arts industry altogether and started experimenting with the audio, film and performance taking place at the NC. During this time he enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University studing computer graphics and joined the university radio station WZRD. This total immersion in the visual and audio arts soon led to video and an interest in film making, culminating in a multimedia performance at the MCA March 27th 2003. This and several gallery performances soon pointed the way back to his original interest in painting. Richard Syska presently is heading the video collective, Group 312 Films, making videos, music, soundtracks and painting. His work has been exhibited in a variety of galleries and festivals including Midwest Motion Graphics Festival, MCA, ARTEC, Select Media and more.
